How Treatment Works
Hair removal lasers target the dark matter (melanin) in follicles without heating the rest of the skin. The intense heat of the laser damages the follicle to effectively inhibit hair growth. Because the laser works by selectively concentrating on dark color, the treatment works best on those with a combination of light skin and dark hair. However, newer lasers are producing better results for patients with darker skin tones. Since hair grows in cycles and only hairs in the growth stage are affected, laser hair removal typically requires three to six sessions to produce the desired results. It is for this same reason that we recommend your treatment sessions be scheduled six to eight weeks apart.
What to Expect
Prior to your hair removal procedure, you should avoid tanning, both from the sun and from sunless tanning products. If you have a tan already, you should wait for it to completely fade. We also recommend you avoid plucking, waxing, and electrolysis, since they can interfere with the laser hair removal process (shaving is still OK). At the beginning of your session, our technician will trim your hair to a few millimeters above the surface of your skin. You will wear eye protection to filter out harmful light.
During your treatment, the technician will press a hand-held laser device to the skin on the treatment area. You will likely feel a slight stinging sensation, which has been compared to the snap of a rubber band against the skin. We may use the Zimmer Cool Air, a machine that cools your skin to make you more comfortable. You might experience some minor swelling and redness, which usually dissipates within 24 hours. Any discomfort can easily be controlled with ice packs, anti-inflammatory creams, or aloe lotions or gels.
After your appointment, you should avoid the sun for several weeks, because your skin will be sensitive to light. You should also refrain from waxing the area but can continue to shave as needed. The results of your laser hair removal will become more evident after successive treatments, when the majority of the hairs in the treatment area have stopped growing.
Advantages of Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is preferred over other methods because it is convenient and delivers long-lasting results. Compared to electrolysis, in which each individual hair follicle must be treated with an electric current, laser therapy allows for faster treatment of a larger area. Traditional hair removal techniques—shaving, waxing, plucking, and chemical depilatories—are both temporary and tedious. Besides having unwanted effects such as nicks, bumps, and ingrown hairs, these methods must be repeated on a continuing basis.
