According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation surgery is one of the most common surgeries in the country with more than 313,000 performed in the U.S. in 2018. Patients typically choose this procedure to achieve larger breasts, improve the shape of their chest, and obtain a more proportionate figure. Dr. Ken Smart works closely with patients to help them look and feel their best with beautiful, natural-looking results.

Many patients have questions about exercising after breast augmentation. In our Frisco, TX, office, we can answer any questions you might have. Our medical team will work with you to provide you a personalized, comprehensive plan that will benefit you the most.

Understanding the Benefits of Exercise

Exercise after breast augmentation surgery can help speed up your recovery. By remaining active, individuals are improving their blood flow. With improved blood flow, the blood carries important nutrients to the surgically treated area. Patients can also prevent blood clots, including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.

Implant Placement Affects Your Activity Level

The placement of implants can affect the type of exercises that you can participate in. If your implants are positioned beneath the muscle, you should wait until both reach their intended position before you do any chest exercises. For patients with implants located above the muscle, they should be able to do chest exercises within two weeks.

First Two Weeks

Patients should avoid most exercise during the first week or two after surgery. Your body needs more rest to heal properly. However, most patients can move around their homes and do some light stretches.

Our Frisco, TX, medical team will recommend that you pay attention to your arm mobility during this period. While you should be able to move your arms to maintain a full range of motion, you should not overexert yourself.

First Month

Within the first month of breast augmentation surgery, you should be able to do some gentle exercising. Light cardio is a great option. Patients often turn to stationary bikes, treadmills, and walking. During this time, patients should continue to avoid strenuous exercises, especially those involving the upper arms like push-ups, swimming, and weightlifting.

First Six Weeks

Most patients should be able to engage in a full exercise regimen within about four to six weeks following augmentation. Since each patient varies, it is important to reach out to our Frisco, TX, office for more guidance. Patients should wait until Dr. Smart clears them for exercise.

Once a patient is cleared and feels ready, most can participate in weightlifting, swimming, pilates, yoga, and cardio routines. Patients should be vigilant and practice restraint if exercising puts an uncomfortable strain on their pectoral muscles or breasts.

Limitations in the Long Term

There are several limitations that patients should be aware of and discuss with our medical team. Exercise after breast augmentation surgery can be affected by the size of your breasts. Bigger breasts might feel heavier and limit your ability to do particular exercises. Since there are several types of implants, they can play a role in how much you can exercise and the types of activities you can participate in.

Patients should note that if there is too much contraction of the chest muscles, implants can shift and end up in a different position. If the implants move too much, the patient might have to visit her surgeon for additional procedures to reposition the implants.
