Here at Frisco Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, we like to offer a wide range of treatment options in order to help people enhance their appearance. This means performing anti-aging surgeries such as face lift and brow lift as well as using the latest skin care methods that are non-invasive or minimally invasive.

Many patients come to our practice in order to reduce the appearance of facial lines, so we'd like to focus on some particularly noticeable lines that can affect your appearance: nasolabial folds.

About Nasolabial Folds

Also known as laugh lines and smile lines, nasolabial folds are those lines that form on either side of your mouth leading up to the sides of the nose. These are natural lines that help define the overall appearance of your face. With age, however, these lines and folds can droop and cause aesthetic flaws. This is especially true when the cheek area sags or droops as part of the natural aging process.

In order to treat nasolabial folds, there are surgical and non-surgical options to consider. Let's look at the four of the most common treatments:

Face Lift as a Treatment for Nasolabial Folds

A face lift is designed to address drooping and sagging of the middle portions of the face. This is accomplished thanks to incisions made behind the ears and along the lower portion of the hairline in the sideburn area. Through these incisions, underlying structures are adjusted and excess skin and tissue can be removed. Your surgeon will then carefully pull the remaining skin tighter to reduce wrinkles and drooping.

The face lift is able to address the appearance of the cheek area as well as lines and wrinkles at the corners of the eyes. This makes the face lift one of the ideal surgical options for people who want to look years younger.

Dermal Filler Injections as a Treatment for Nasolabial Folds

Dermal fillers are specially synthesized substances that are injected into the skin in order to increase volume and reduce wrinkles and lines. There are many different kinds of dermal fillers available, all of which may be ideal for addressing issues with you smile and laugh lines.

The results of dermal filler injection treatments will last for several months, with repeat procedures used as needed to maintain the results.

Fat Transfer Injections as a Treatment for Nasolabial Folds

Fat transfer injections are similar in principal as dermal filler treatments in that they add volume to the injection site. What makes fat transfer different, however, is that it uses the patient's own fat rather than a synthetic substance. This fat is taken from one part of the body through liposuction (usually the abdominal area or buttocks) and then injected into the treatment area.

Some of the injected fat will be reabsorbed into the skin, though much of it will remain in the face for a long time, meaning exceptionally long-lasting results.

BOTOX® Injections as a Treatment for Nasolabial Folds

BOTOX® injections are another non-surgical solution for nasolabial folds, though they work on a much different principle than dermal fillers and fat transfer. BOTOX® cosmetic is a substance that stops muscle contractions in the injection site. This means that the muscles that cause wrinkles to form will stop moving, allowing the wrinkles to fade.

As with dermal fillers, the results of BOTOX® injection treatments will last for several months. Repeat BOTOX® injections can be performed to maintain the results.
