Along with the eyes, the neck is one of the first parts of the body to exhibit signs of aging. Loose neck tissue can create what's commonly referred to as a "turkey wattle," an undesirable sagging beneath the chin. By making small incisions in the neck and performing liposuction, Dr. Smart can eliminate unwanted skin and fat tissue, refine the neck shape, and improve a patient's overall appearance.
Dr. Smart: Many patients come into the office complaining that they're
starting to see signs of aging in their neck. They'll say that they look
like their parents, and they're not quite ready to do that. However,
they're also not ready for a face lift either. This is when a neck lift can
really provide some dramatic results without the stigmata of having a full
face lift. What a neck lift is, is a combination of liposuction and then
usually some deeper surgery. The liposuction of the neck can be performed
through three very small incisions that are very inconspicuous.
A lot of people have the bands in their neck, or what they call the turkey
gobble neck. Those bands are caused by a muscle that's in the neck and
really it's a flat, sheet-like muscle that extends up into the cheek. With
age and gravity, that muscle loosens and sags and creates those bands.
After I perform the liposuction, I'm able to go in through that incision
and tighten that muscle which is called a platismaplasty. This really
doesn't add any downtime to your recovery, but it really adds a lot to the
final result by tightening the neck and giving a really nice angle and a
Paul: I was ecstatic from day one. Getting out of recovery, right away I
could see and feel the difference. The next day going to work, there was
very minimal bruising and everybody knew I had something done, but they
couldn't figure out what it was until I told them. Everybody was just
ecstatic about it. I was. I just feel so much better in the mornings when I
wake up, and I'm getting ready and I don't see a weak chin any longer. I
actually have some shape to my face.
