Dr. Smart: Body contouring after massive weight loss is really a new field in plastic surgery. It's come on because of the explosion in weight loss surgeries that began, really, in the mid to late 1990s. Now, weight loss surgery is extremely common, and most plastic surgeons perform a large amount of body contouring after this massive weight loss. That being said, it can be more difficult than just your average abdominoplasty patient. The experience and expertise of doing many of these cases, I think really improves the patient's safety during the procedure and their outcome afterwards. The important things to consider from the plastic surgeon's end is, is this patient at their best weight to undergo these surgeries? If the patient is still losing large amounts of weight rapidly, well then, they're not going to be a good candidate at that time. It's better to wait until your weight loss has plateaued. You don't want to have surgery and then lose more weight, and then change that result or need to undergo further revisions or more surgery. Amy: After losing a large amount of weight in my early 20s, I turned to diet and exercise in hopes to tighten up my skin and transform my body, and wasn't really happy with the results that I was getting. So, after a few years of struggling with insecurity and my self-esteem, I turned to Dr. Smart, had several procedures done, and he's just totally transformed my body. Couldn't be happier.
