A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is an operation that removes excess skin and fat from the abdominal wall. It tightens the abdominal muscles giving the abdomen a slender and pleasing profile. It may be performed on women with extra skin and stretched out abdominal muscles secondary to pregnancy, as well. For those patients that have undergone weight loss, an abdominoplasty can improve the appearance of excess skin. Remember that surgery itself is not a means of weight loss. Results are best when it is combined with a healthy lifestyle that includes a good diet as well as exercise. If you are interested in an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, and live near Plano, Allen, or Frisco, Texas, Dr. Ken Smart at Frisco Plastic Surgery can help. Using the most advanced techniques in plastic surgery today and the artful skill of our experienced surgeon, we can give you the beautiful results you desire.
Candidates are in overall good health. Patients with multiple medical problems, especially diabetics and smokers, have increased risk of complications. The best candidates are those patients that are relatively close to their ideal body weight but have excess skin and loose abdominal muscles. At your complimentary cosmetic consultation, our Dr. Smart will determine which type of abdominoplasty best suits you.
Dr. Smart performs many types of tummy tuck surgery. After a thorough consultation and physical examination, he will customize a surgery that fits your needs and that will give you the best aesthetic outcome. He commonly includes LipoSelection® as part of the surgery to contour your waistline. Patients with excess skin confined to below the bellybutton are good candidates for a mini-abdominoplasty. Those with excess skin both above and below the belly button will require a full abdominoplasty. Circumferential abdominoplasty, also known as a body lift, is performed when patients have excess skin that goes around their entire waistline. This procedure also helps to lift both the thighs and the buttock area.
Some of our post-pregnancy tummy tuck patients are interested in other “Mommy Makeover” procedures that will improve the appearance of the body and restore the youthful appearance of the face and body. Breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, or body contouring procedures may be an option for you during the same surgical appointment. If you are interested in any of these procedures, Dr. Smart will discuss them with you during your complimentary consultation.
When we perform a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) at Frisco Plastic Surgery, P.A., located near Plano, Allen, and McKinney, Texas, Dr. Smart uses the On-Q® PainBuster®. This device dramatically reduces post-op pain and increases comfort by providing continuous infusion of local anesthetic to the surgical site. Patients are back on their feet quicker and have an overall better tummy tuck experience by using this device.
Dr. Smart typically uses general anesthesia for abdominoplasty surgery.
Dr. Smart performs abdominoplasty surgery in the fully accredited surgery center in Frisco near Plano, Texas located conveniently in his professional building. At Dr. Smart's discretion, the surgery may be performed in an in-patient facility.
You will have nothing to eat or drink the morning of surgery except specific medications as prescribed by Dr. Smart. Typically, on the day of your tummy tuck, you will arrive at our Plano-area surgery center or local hospital one hour before your surgery. A board-certified physician anesthesiologist will meet you and take your history before the anesthetic begins. Dr. Smart will also see you and mark you for your surgery.
After your procedure, you will either be discharged home or observed overnight in the hospital. Dr. Smart makes this decision based on your overall health and the amount of support you will have at home. You will continue to wear an abdominal binder for approximately three weeks after surgery.
Dr. Smart places all abdominoplasty scars in as inconspicuous a place as possible. They usually end up low on the waistline, or bikini line. They are easily concealed by one's swimsuit or shorts.

Typically, patients return to work in 10 to 14 days. This is individualized and it depends on the type of work you do. You will also need to take six weeks before any exercise regimen can be begun. Certain exercises that put increased stress on the abdominal muscles, such as sit ups or crunches may require up to three months. Typically, we will need to schedule four to five post-op visits after your tummy tuck.
After the complimentary tummy tuck consultation and physical examination, we will present an itemized quote for your procedure. Your quote will include the surgeon’s fee, the anesthesiologist's fee, the facility fee, and any other fees that may be required for your procedure.
