What Are the Scars Like after Breast Reduction?

There are multiple ways to perform a breast reduction. The determining factor is the amount of extra breast tissue, fat, and skin that you have and the distance your nipple needs to be elevated. Dr. Smart carefully selects women for minimal scar techniques, otherwise known as the vertical breast reduction. The candidates for this technique generally require what is considered to be a small breast reduction. The resultant scar is shaped like a lollipop; there is a circular scar around the areola and a vertical scar directly below that. Patients with larger amounts of excess breast tissue and skin that need to be removed usually require the traditional incisions which result in scars that are anchor shaped, or like an upside down T.

Can I Breast Feed after a Breast Reduction?

Studies have shown that there is no decrease in the ability to breast feed amongst women who have undergone breast reduction. However, there are certain breast reduction techniques that can either make breast feeding more unlikely or impossible.

What Will My Breast Reduction Consultation Be Like?

Most women are able to return to work in three to five days. Pain is minimal and is easily treated with oral pain medication. Most women can return to light exercise in three to four weeks and to full activity in six weeks.

Will My Health Insurance Cover a Breast Reduction?

Traditionally, breast reduction has been covered by health insurance when the procedure was performed to treat back, neck and shoulder pain. However, more and more health insurance plans are dropping it altogether as a covered benefit or making it more difficult for the patient to qualify for it. If the procedure is being performed to relieve the symptoms of macromastia, and not as a cosmetic procedure, Dr. Smart will submit a letter to your insurance company requesting that they cover the medically necessary procedure.
