Male breast reduction is commonly performed to treat over-development of the male breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia. At Frisco Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ken Smart performs male breast reduction to improve the contour and shape of the chest for a more masculine appearance. Although gynecomastia can affect up to half of all men, the treatment for this condition has been revolutionized by the introduction of ultrasonic assisted liposuction. Our plastic surgeon, Dr. Ken Smart, utilizes the most advanced form of this, known as LipoSelection® only by Vaser®. By melting and suctioning excess fat from the chest, we can improve the shape and contour of your body for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. If you suffer from gynecomastia, male breast reduction may an option for you. Contact Frisco Plastic Surgery near Plano, Texas to schedule a complimentary consultation with our plastic surgeon.
Men that are in good health and have large, overdeveloped breasts may be considered for male breast reduction. It is important also to have good skin elasticity so that it may re-drape as needed. Obesity, if an issue, will need to be addressed before surgery is considered.
Most commonly, there is no cause found for gynecomastia. However, it can be associated with marijuana usage, alcoholism, and the use of anabolic steroids. If any of these are an issue, they should be stopped before attempting surgery.
Most commonly, Dr. Smart treats gynecomastia with LipoSelection® alone. Sometimes there is a small bud of glandular tissue that cannot be removed with suction alone. In this instance, a small incision is made around the nipple to remove the tissue. In very rare instances incisions are made to remove large amounts of excess skin.
Traditional liposuction was often inadequate due to the glandular and fibrous nature of the tissue. LipoSelection® gently melts the tissue before suctioning it out leading to less tissue damage, less bruising, and an easier recovery. There is also superior skin tightening with LipoSelection® leading to a smoother and tighter contour and less need to re-sect skin after the male breast reduction procedure. At Frisco Plastic Surgery, P.A., Dr. Ken Smart serves gynecomastia patients from the greater Plano and Dallas areas with the most advanced technology available to give a more masculine appearance to the chest.
A compression garment that is easily concealed under your clothes is worn for six weeks. Patients can usually return to work by the third day. Pain is easily controlled with oral medication. Cardiovascular exercise can usually be started three to four weeks after the surgery. Upper body exercises can usually be started about six weeks after surgery.
When LipoSelection® is the sole treatment, scarring is very minimal and usually not noticeable after about six months. The incision that is placed around the nipple when suction alone is not adequate also heals very well and with time is not noticeable. Only in rare instances when extra skin is excised are there any long scars.
Most health insurance does not cover the cost of gynecomastia surgery. At the end of your complimentary consultation, you will be given a quote that will itemize the cost of male breast reduction. This price will include a surgeon's fee, the anesthesiologist's fee, and a facility fee.
Men who have excess breast tissue may feel self conscious and uncomfortable with their bodies.
