BOTOX® Cosmetic is an FDA-approved treatment method for treating frown lines, which are the vertical wrinkles that develop between the eyebrows. It can also be used to treat the horizontal wrinkles of the forehead as well as the wrinkles around eyes, also known as crow's feet. These particular wrinkles are caused by the contraction of facial muscles. BOTOX® Cosmetic is the toxin from the bacteria clostridium botulinum. The very small doses that are given are harmless to the body, but relax the muscles where they are injected. Usually within 72 hours, the muscle that the toxin is injected into loses its ability to contract and the wrinkle disappears.
The results of BOTOX® Cosmetic last on average three months, but injections can be repeated to prolong the results. Frequently injected in smile lines, lips, and the nasolabial fold between the nose and mouth, Restylane® is a great option for our Allen and Frisco, Texas-area patients seeking facial rejuvenation without surgery.
Made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin, Restylane® is a lasting injectable filler that offers patients excellent results. Wrinkle elimination with injectable fillers has been around for many years in the form of collagen treatments. In the past, these treatments required skin testing to make sure that you were not allergic to the collagen and usually only lasted a couple of months. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers, like Restylane®, require no skin testing and are approved by the FDA.
The hyaluronic acid used in Restylane® is a normal constituent of skin that helps to give it volume. As we age, however, the natural hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases, creating wrinkles and areas of hollowness. These areas draw attention to themselves because shadows are created. Filling in the area with the Restylane® or another hyaluronic acid-based filler helps eliminate shadowing and creates a more youthful appearance in a very subtle manner. The procedure can be performed in the office and is virtually painless when a nerve block is performed with local anesthesia. Recovery is very simple with essentially no downtime and the results generally last six to eight months.
Juvéderm™ is another hyaluronic acid-based filler that can be used much like Restylane® to fill facial folds and creases around the mouth, lips, and chin. As people age, skin loses its elasticity as the amount of hyaluronic acid is depleted. Juvéderm™ restores that hyaluronic acid to bring back the volume and fill creases and lines. Juvéderm™ actually offers the highest concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid and lasts approximately six to nine months. Juvéderm™ is commonly used to enhance the lips, restoring that full, kissable look of youth.
Radiesse® is an FDA-approved longer-lasting dermal filler made of calcium-based microspheres that stimulate the body to produce new collagen. Radiesse® is injected into the skin through a simple and minimally invasive procedure with visible improvement of folds and wrinkles. Often with just one or two office visits, many patients can enjoy the effects of Radiesse® for a year or more. Radiesse® is often used in nasolabial folds, cheeks, and below the eyes. For more dramatic results, Dr. Smart uses Radiesse® together with BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Sculptra™ is a new injectable that can be used for cosmetic purposes and is FDA approved for treating HIV lipoatrophy. It is a substance known as poly-L-lactic acid and works by causing gradual dermal thickening. It is injected below the skin in areas of hollowing, such as the smile lines, and instead of immediately correcting the area in the same way that the other fillers do, it slowly increases the thickness of the skin eliminating the problem area. It can be performed in the office and is generally tolerated very well with the use of topical numbing agents. One of its biggest advantages is that it can last up to two years. Dr. Smart has gained extensive experience with this product since its introduction and has been very impressed with the results.
