What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, the medical term for surgically reshaping the nose, is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed by plastic surgeons. It is done to either reduce or enlarge the size of the nose in some way. The shape and the size of the tip of the nose can be altered, the length of the nose can be shortened or elongated, the width of the nostrils can be reduced, the angle between the nose and the lip can be altered, and humps on the nose can be removed during rhinoplasty surgery. At our practice near Plano, Allen, and McKinney, Texas, we also perform nose surgery for functional reasons, as well. Breathing problems secondary to traumatic injuries to the nose or congenital deviations of the septum can be corrected.
It is important to select a rhinoplasty surgeon that you are not only comfortable with, but one who is trained in the latest techniques. Rhinoplasty is considered by most plastic surgeons to be the most difficult cosmetic procedure to master, where the slightest internal maneuver can make dramatic changes in the external appearance of the nose. Dr. Smart is a board-certified plastic surgeon trained by world-renowned leaders in the field of rhinoplasty for both cosmetic and reconstructive purposes. He will carefully listen to your concerns about your nose and then customize an operative strategy to help you reach your goals.
Am I a Good Candidate for Nose Surgery?
Candidates should enjoy good health and have realistic expectations of what a rhinoplasty can do for them. This simply means the patient should be looking for improvement, not perfection. Age is also a consideration since it is not uncommon for young teenagers to seek improvement in the appearance of their nose. Dr. Smart prefers that the patient has completed their growth spurt before undergoing cosmetic nose surgery.
What Happens During the Rhinoplasty Consultation?
Dr. Smart will start by asking you what you do not like about your nose and how you would like it changed. He will review your past medical history with you focusing on your nose. It is important to tell him about any prior surgery or trauma to your nose, no matter how long ago it was. It is also important to discuss any breathing problems you may have. He will then perform a thorough examination of the external portions of your nose as well is doing an internal exam to check for deviation of your septum. Dr. Smart will then discuss the surgery with you and what you can expect from it.
Often times, patients are interested in having other plastic surgery procedures performed in conjunction with their rhinoplasty. During the complimentary cosmetic consultation, Dr. Smart will discuss any other procedures with you. If you are interested in having one of these plastic surgery procedures, ask a member of our team, or Dr. Smart for more details during your consultation.
How Is Nose Surgery Performed?
There are two ways to perform a rhinoplasty, either through an open approach or a closed approach. Dr. Smart performs most nose surgery procedures through an open approach which involves a small incision across the mid-portion of the skin that separates the two nostrils. This allows the skin to be lifted off of the underlying framework of the nose and allows for the greatest visualization of the structures to be sculpted. The closed approach involves an incision on the inside surface of the nostrils and in some instances this is Dr. Smart's preferred method.
What Type of Anesthesia is Required for Rhinoplasty?
At Frisco Plastic Surgery, P.A., located near McKinney and Plano, Texas, Dr. Ken Smart is committed to making sure his patients are comfortable. For that reason, Dr. Smart uses general anesthesia for all of his rhinoplasty patients to make sure the procedure is as pain-free as possible.
What Is the Recovery Like After Nose Surgery?
When you wake up from your surgery, you will have an external splint on your nose and a piece of gauze across the base of your nose. You may also have clear plastic splints inside of your nose to help keep your septum straight if there was work done on it and gauze packed in each nostril. Any pain around your nose can be controlled with oral pain medication. Your face will feel swollen and you may develop bruising under your eyes in the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery. This usually peaks the third day after surgery and slowly goes away over the next 10 days to two weeks. Your nasal splint and sutures will be removed one week after surgery. Dr. Smart will then have you wear the external splint at night for two more weeks to help with resolution of swelling. Your result will not be visible for six to 12 months after nose surgery. Most of our patients are able to return to work within two weeks after their surgery.
Will There Be Scars After My Rhinoplasty?
Visible external scars are almost undetectable and result only from nose surgery performed with the open approach, or only when the nostril flare is reduced. Both of these scars heal very well and with time fade enough that they are barely visible. When the closed approach is used, there are no visible external scars.
How Much Will My Nose Surgery Cost?
At the end of your complimentary rhinoplasty consultation, Dr. Smart's patient coordinator will go over your personalized quote with you. The entire cost of your procedure, including the surgeon's fee, the anesthesiologist’s fee, and the facility fee will be itemized in your quote.
